RJD2 Deadringer An avid vinyl enthusiast himself, with a collection boasting over 20,000 records, RJD2 is as much of a music historian and crate-digging break-beat archeologist as he is | masterful studio wizard. Doing as much to propel the instrumental Hip-Hop genre as the revered DJ Shadow, RJD2 proved to be a skilled groove merchant in his own right with his debut full length record DEADRINGER. Chock full authentic sample-based Hip-Hop tracks with just 3 vocal tracks, the only hint of its crossover success is the sheer quality of the music. DEAD RINGER is a great example of how sample-based music can draw from so many influences and sources, from tracks with heavy beats and soaring synth leads to tracks derived from bossa nova and jazz. A great intro to how great instrumental hip-hop can be and a good example of the differentiation between Top 40 Rap and Hip-Hop. Amazing record for parties and background music alike.
